Traditional Thai Massage Is Healing And Relaxing

The traditional Thai massage made its humble beginnings through the expression loving kindness of the Vajrayana or the Diamond Healing lineage of Tibet some 2,500 years ago. Ayurvedic approaches and Chinese traditional medicine tainted the pure form through time. It was formed as a part of the elements of Thai healing for hundreds of years.

The traditional Thai massage promotes internal healing by incorporating elements of mindfulness, gentle rocking, deep stretching, and rhythmic compression. A healing experience leads to the enhancement of the circulation and application of pressure on vital acupressure points by using Thai massage principles. Thai massage is also like doing yoga without any effort. To open the joints and relieve the tense muscles, assisted yoga Asanas or poses are applied. The prana, chi, or healing energy flows smoothly through the paths in the body through such asanas.

The therapists positions the body into a routine of yoga-like stretches by using one’s body parts like knees, legs, and feet. Some common Thai massage techniques include the placid rocking, rhythmic muscle compression, and the rolling of limbs. These intend to relax the body while clearing the obstructions to make the energy flow. According to Ayurvedic principles, the energy is balanced by applying variable pressure along the energy lines or ‘Sen’. Joint mobilization and acupressure are the other methods used during the treatment. The entire process is relaxing, healing and energizing.

The process generally begins with the feet and proceeds upwards to the head slowly. The are four positions, namely: face down, face up, side and sitting positions usually used. The therapists use these positions to move the body to different asanas or poses and exercises in accordance to their flexibility. It is physically challenging and tiring for both the therapist and the receiver despite the process being slow and deliberate. Using certain body parts like elbows, feet, forearms and knees, deep stretches and movements can be executed. The traditional Thai massage is generally performed on a futon or padded mat on the floor. The entire process can be completed in 1 to 2 hours while being fully dressed because no oil is used in the process.

The Four Divine States of Mind: which are the Loving Kindness, Vicarious Joy, Compassion, and Equanimity are the goals of traditional Thai Massage. Can any massage still be better than being holistic, healing and harmonious?
